Lincoln Mews named Multifamily Renovation Project of the Year by EarthCraft Virginia

On Thursday, March 24, Lincoln Mews was announced as the Multifamily Renovation Project of the Year at the second annual EarthCraft Virginia Builder Awards.  Acquired by Better Housing Coalition in 2008, Lincoln Mews is the complete renovation of what was formerly known as Lincoln Manor.

Bernard Rogers, Senior Project Manager, Jeff Reynolds, Director of Construction, and Bob Newman, VP and Chief Operating Officer accept the award for BHC.

BHC renovated the interiors and exteriors of the apartments and upgraded them with modern energy-efficient features certified under the EarthCraft Multifamily Program.  These renovations include the addition of:

  • Blown-in cellulose insulation in the attics and exterior walls
  • Minimum 14 SEER high efficiency heat pumps
  • Energy-efficient tankless gas water heaters
  • New high efficiency HVAC systems
  • New low-E windows (Energy Star certified)
  • Entry doors with proper air sealing
  • Energy Star appliances and light fixtures
  • Low-flow plumbing fixtures
  • Low-VOC solvents, adhesives and paints
  • Low-maintenance HardiPlank cement board siding
  • Eco-friendly landscaping, such as rain gardens planted at downspouts with drought-tolerant plants

These new energy-efficient features are estimated to reduce residents’ utility costs by 50%, making monthly payments even more affordable.  Prior to BHC’s renovations, poor insultation resulted in high energy bills without effectively heating or cooling the apartments.

Before
After

The revitalization of Lincoln Mews includes the addition of a new Community Center.  This building also utilizes green building technologies, and serves as a hub for free and voluntary resident support services.  Prior to the arrival of BHC, the Lincoln Manor Apartments had a reputation for being a dangerous, crime-ridden complex.  By offering new resident support services and resources at the Community Center, it is expected that crime rates will decrease in this neighborhood as they have in other BHC communities.

The new Community Center is equipped with solar panels and a cistern to water surrounding plants.

BHC thanks EarthCraft Virginia for this award, and for helping us provide comfortable, eco-friendly homes for our residents.
