Better Housing Coalition Names New Board Member

Richmond, Va. (August 1, 2012)—The Better Housing Coalition (BHC) named R. Scott Ukrop to its Board of Directors. Ukrop is principal and director of communications at 3north, an award-winning architectural and design firm, and is a partner in 3north’s related development firm, REDShed.

Earlier in his career, Ukrop founded and served as CEO of Grace Street Home Additions, and was also vice president of marketing for Ukrop’s Super Markets, Inc., where he led the company’s pioneering card-based relationship marketing program.

“Scott has been dedicated to community service in Richmond for more than 20 years,” said T.K. Somanath, president and CEO of BHC. “His knowledge of real estate development, marketing and non-profit operations will bring much value to our Board.”

Ukrop serves on the Board of Trustees for Historic Richmond Foundation, and has served on the Board of The Healing Place, the Virginia Foundation for Architecture and the YMCA of Greater Richmond, among other organizations. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from the College of William and Mary and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Virginia’s Darden School.

Better Housing Coalition Names New Chief Financial Officer

Richmond, Va. (August 1, 2012)—The Better Housing Coalition (BHC), a non-profit organization focused on revitalizing communities through affordable housing, named Julie Hovermale, CPA, its chief financial officer. In this role, Hovermale manages the organization’s operating budget and its finance, accounting and reporting activities. She will play a key role in capital planning and financing BHC’s large real estate developments.

Hovermale oversees financial activities related to three operations and 22 entities with combined operating budgets of $15 million. These include a property management entity that operates BHC’s portfolio of 15 multi-family communities; a construction company that builds and renovates single-family and multi-family homes; and BHC’s core operations that revitalize communities through high-quality, affordable housing and provide support services to residents.

“The landscape for developing affordable housing has changed dramatically in the last few years as federal and state budgets are cut further,” said T.K. Somanath, president and CEO of BHC. “Julie’s broad experience in finance will provide fresh perspective and new approaches to funding our larger developments, and her impeccable knowledge of accounting principles and operations will add more structure to our growing organization.”

Most recently, Hovermale was director of finance for Virginia Supportive Housing. Earlier in her career she was a manager with Keiter with expertise in both tax and accounting. She earned her B.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Hovermale currently serves on the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters. She is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Society of Public Accountants.
