Victoria (“Tori”) Drummond serves as chair of 3HC, Better Housing Coalition’s Junior Board, and senior financial analyst for Dominion. Get to know Tori:

How did you become interested in BHC?

I worked for four years in corporate philanthropy at Dominion. I saw the great work that BHC was doing to revive old neighborhoods and provide affordable housing to lower income families. I like to see permanent solutions to poverty, and feel that affordable housing is one of the first steps. I went on one of BHC’s bus tours and was hooked!

What role does volunteerism play in your life?

You learn so much from volunteering, things that affect every aspect of your life. The more you are exposed to, the more sympathy and understanding you bring to every situation. You realize that issues aren’t as simple as they sound, and solutions are often slow and complicated.  I was a Big Sister in college, and have been tutoring the same young girl for four years. I feel you can have a great impact by working with one child or family for an extended period. Over time, you really understand their circumstances and see a multiplying effect of the time you invest. For example, by helping one student get into college, you can permanently improve a family’s financial situation. I am seeing it happen first-hand.

What is 3HC?

3HC is a group of enthusiastic young professionals who want to spread the news about the Better Housing Coalition’s good work. We come from a variety of backgrounds – social work, urban planning, health care, real estate – and we are hoping to attract others, too. Personally, I would love to see more people move into BHC properties because of our outreach.

What are 3HC members working on?

We are doing a combination of service projects and social events, as well as assisting BHC staff to assist with upcoming events. We want members to engage in anything they are interested in, from planting a garden, to helping with a 5k, to inviting friends to attend an open house or workshop.

Tell us about your work at Dominion.

I’ve been at Dominion for almost 8 years, and in my current role for the past year. I spend my days at our corporate office with a great view of the James River, running financial analyses for our power plants and renewable projects. Dominion really supports employee volunteerism. The company also donates over $20 million a year to the communities where we work, and thankfully BHC is among the recipients!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I spend most of my free time with my family and friends. My husband Tim and I have a 5-month-old daughter, Fiona Mae, who is a joy. We lead a bible study, and I tutor a 10-year-old. I constantly read (and listen to) books, and right now I’m learning to knit. Finally, we love to explore our city and travel to others. We enjoy trying new restaurants, seeing live music, and visiting museums.
