The Living Community at Christ Church is an exciting collaborative effort between Christ Church Episcopal (CCE), the Better Housing Coalition, and Eagle Construction of Virginia  (the development partners). The partners have committed to develop the 15-acre site owned by and adjacent to CCE into a master planned residential community for senior adults aged 55 and older, and a small group of neurodiverse adults who are able to live independently.

This planned community is the result of a two-year visioning and planning process with CCE’s congregation, which also included outreach to the neighbors. The Church is creating this community in furtherance of its mission to do great good, to be a good steward of God’s gifts, and to be a good neighbor.

This residential community will consist of 196 apartment homes for senior adults aged 55 and older, with the exception of a small number of homes which will be reserved for neurodiverse adults who are able to live independently.  The community will also include approximately 9,000 square feet of community space which residents will share with Christ Church Episcopal for activities and services.

Eagle Construction will also construct four new single-family detached homes on the site, complementing the community.

Extensive research shows that there is a shortage of available rental homes across our region to serve two high-need populations: moderate-income seniors, and neurodiverse individuals over the age of 18. The Living Community at Christ Church Episcopal will address those needs in part by providing attractive, high-quality homes in Western Henrico County, in an area where home prices have rapidly risen out of reach of many area residents.

About the Development Partners

Christ Church Episcopal, the property owner, is located at 5000 Pouncey Tract Road in Glen Allen, Virginia. Christ Church was established on September 12, 1993 with a mission to be an inviting, growing, and living presence in our community and beyond.

CCE’s ministries to seniors and families of neurodiverse persons significantly enhance the quality of life for members of the church. Future residents will have these same options for fellowship, personal growth, and opportunities to help others. CCE’s seniors are beloved volunteers who provide emergency packages to help people in dire financial need, knit prayer shawls, collect school supplies for children at Henry Marsh School, collect food for people who are hungry, and help with Sunday School, Christmas Pageants, and Vacation Bible Schools. They participate in volunteer service at Shalom Farms and CARITAS. There will be appropriate volunteer opportunities at CCE’s 5-day a week Preschool.

The Better Housing Coalition (BHC), the Richmond region’s largest non-profit community development corporation, was established in 1988 and is the developer of the Living Community at Christ Church. Once construction is completed, BHC will also manage the property.

A trusted builder since 1994, home builder Eagle Construction has built 135 communities and more than 5,000 quality homes from Central Virginia to Hampton Roads.

Our Collective Vision for the Community

We believe that all citizens in our region should have access to a safe, attractive place to call home, in an area of their choosing. In Western Henrico County, this is especially true for moderate-income seniors and neurodiverse individuals, some of whom encounter additional barriers beyond income. We envision a hospitable community of mutual support for seniors and neurodiverse people. We wish to host a community of inclusion in which differences are acknowledged and valued. The Living Community at Christ Church will give this population greater choices in where and how to live, in an attractive community near shopping, recreational amenities, medical services and faith communities.
