Claiborne Square named Best Housing Development at Governor’s Housing Conference

Better Housing Coalition was honored to receive the Virginia Housing Award for Best Housing Development at the Governor’s Housing Conference on Thursday, November 17, 2011.  The award was for the development of Claiborne Square in parternership with Restoration of Petersburg CDC.  While this is BHC’s seventh affordable senior community, it is our first revitalization initiative in Petersburg.

Claiborne Square is a 47-unit high quality, affordable senior community in the Halifax area of Petersburg, featuring modern energy-efficient technologies – including solar panels to heat water in common facilities.  The community is EarthCraft certified, and has a wide array of amenities that help seniors live comfortably and safely, such as secure building access, a private outdoor terrace, community room and library, on-site laundry facilities, an elevator, resident parking, and service by the bus line with a stop on the property.  Claiborne Square welcomed its first residents in August 2011.  BHC has stayed in the community, where its Community Social Work department and its own property management company collaborate to provide residents with exceptional care and service.

“For years, the Better Housing coalition has provided innovative solutions for the affordable housing market,” said Bill Shelton, director of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), who presented the awards. “Claiborne Square will serve as a catalyst for additional development and revitalization in the area.”
