When Ms. Jeanett moved into Carter Woods 21 years ago, the community looked nothing like it does today — and she’s seen every bit of that change firsthand. This month, she celebrated her 93rd birthday, and when asked about her secret to a long, full life, she simply said it comes down to good friends and a place that feels like home.

“I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else,” she says.

Ms. Jeanett has the rare distinction of having lived through Carter Woods’ entire evolution. She was among the first residents to call the property home, living in the first building while the second was still under construction. When it was finally complete, she made the move — becoming part of the very fabric of Carter Woods’ growth from the ground up.

Some of her fondest memories come from the friendships she built along the way. She was part of a lively group of residents affectionately nicknamed “The 70s” — a nod to their age at the time — who made a habit of getting out and having fun together. Day trips to the Williamsburg Premium Outlets and outings to the Hampton Jazz Festival were among their favorite adventures, and those memories still bring a smile to her face today.

Now, having matriculated gracefully into this next chapter of life, Ms. Jeanett stays just as active — this time through the many programs Resident Services brings right to her doorstep. She never misses a round of bingo, enjoys arts and crafts, and looks forward to the monthly birthday celebrations that bring residents together. Thanksgiving dinner shared among neighbors has become a cherished tradition, and she appreciates having health professionals visit the community to check in on residents’ wellbeing. She’s also become a regular at the community markets, like Shalom Farms, which bring fresh, local produce right to Carter Woods.

Twenty-six years, two buildings, countless friendships, and a lifetime of memories later, Ms. Jeanett is proof that community is what turns a building into a home. Happy 93rd birthday, Ms. Jeanett — Carter Woods is lucky to have you!
