The Richmonder Real State of the City Breakfast

Preserving Character While Embracing Change

At The Richmonder’s Real State of the City breakfast, Better Housing Coalition President and CEO Greta J. Harris joined civic and community leaders for a thoughtful conversation about Richmond’s future and the forces shaping its growth.

The discussion centered on one of the most pressing challenges facing the region: the growing tension between rapid development and housing affordability. As Richmond continues to attract new investment and residents, questions remain about how to preserve the city’s identity while ensuring opportunity remains accessible to longtime community members.

Harris spoke candidly about the responsibility that comes with growth. Preserving Richmond’s character, she noted, will require embracing change with intention and courage. That means advancing policies and investments that allow longtime residents to remain rooted in their neighborhoods while expanding diverse and attainable housing options across the city.

Her remarks reinforced a core belief at Better Housing Coalition: growth and equity are not opposing forces. When guided by thoughtful planning and strong partnerships, development can strengthen communities rather than displace them.

As Richmond evolves, BHC remains committed to centering people in every project and policy conversation. Our work continues to focus on protecting community, expanding housing access, and creating pathways to opportunity so that the city’s future reflects the needs and aspirations of all who call it home.
