Better Housing Coalition Presents Groundbreaker and Golden Hammer Awards at the Hotel John Marshall on Nov. 8

Susan Dewey of VHDA to be Honored as Groundbreaker; Six Golden Hammer Recipients to be Announced

Richmond, Va. (Oct. 11, 2012)—The Better Housing Coalition will honor Susan Dewey, executive director of the Virginia Housing and Development Authority, as its Groundbreaker for 2012, and will give its prestigious Golden Hammer Awards to six nominees on Nov. 8, 2012, at the Hotel John Marshall.

The combined awards events — BHC’s signature fundraiser — will create a Hollywood-style, red carpet affair and after-party featuring dinner and live music. Tom Silvestri, publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Dewey will be honored as the Groundbreaker whose leadership and vision brings positive transformation to the Richmond region.

The 13th annual Golden Hammer Awards will honor professionals whose work enhances the Richmond region through revitalization, quality design, blight reduction and historic preservation.

The Golden Hammer Awards categories include:

  • Best Single-Family Residential Renovation
  • Best Commercial Renovation – Neighborhood Scale
  • Best Commercial Renovation – Large Scale
  • Best New Infill Project
  • Best Neighborhood Design Project

“The Richmond community places a premium on projects that enhance neighborhoods and preserve our historic urban landscape,” said David Herring, vice president of BHC’s Center for Neighborhood Revitalization and founder of the awards. “These juried awards honor people who weave those values into their work.”

About BHC

The Better Housing Coalition (BHC) changes lives and transforms communities through high-quality, affordable housing. BHC achieves long-term neighborhood revitalization by creating mixed-income, mixed use developments and providing on-going social work services to help residents become more self-reliant and lead healthier lives.

BHC’s developments preserve neighborhood character and incorporate architectural and green-building features not normally associated with affordable housing. The high quality tends to attract additional investment that stabilizes and turns around neighborhoods.

As a non-profit organization, BHC relies on philanthropic support to create lasting change for low-income residents on our region. For more information visit www.betterhousingcoalition.org.
